Our Team
Who writes Trail Tested: a small team of US-trail hikers publishing problem-first gear guidance, with a documented research methodology and open corrections.
In this guide
Trail Tested is written by a small team of hikers who spend their time on US trails — not in marketing meetings. The site exists for one reason: hikers who don’t fit the standard mold (wide feet, short torsos, tight budgets, bad knees) deserve gear guidance as specific as their problems.
How we work
Every guide on this site follows the same documented process:
- Start from the problem, not the product. Each article targets one specific hiker problem — the narrower, the better.
- Verify specs. Manufacturer numbers are checked and recorded: weight, dimensions, materials, torso ranges, temperature ratings.
- Aggregate real reviews. We read verified-buyer reviews across retailers and hiker communities, looking for recurring praise and recurring complaints. Patterns across dozens of reviewers beat any single opinion.
- Price-check at publish time. Prices move; the check date is what matters.
- Label honestly. A pick is either criteria-tested against a documented checklist or research-compiled from trusted sources — and the article says which, plainly. We never write “we tested” about gear we evaluated any other way.
The full standard lives on our About & Methodology page.
Why trust a small team
We don’t have a 100-person testing lab, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we have is focus: one niche (hiking), one audience (US trail hikers with specific needs), and a correction policy with teeth — if a pick is wrong, outdated, or mispriced, we fix it, and the article’s update date shows the fix. Every article carries its publish and update dates so you can judge freshness yourself.
Corrections welcome
Gear changes and research misses things. If you spot an error, an outdated price, or a better pick for a specific problem, tell us via the contact page — corrections from hikers are how this site stays accurate.
